The story behind Greenstone Counseling began long before the practice itself—with a meaningful gift from a friend.
In his early twenties, Greenstone co-founder Brady Nordfelt spent several years living in Australia, where he developed a close friendship with someone from New Zealand and a deep appreciation for Māori culture. That friend gave Brady a greenstone necklace from New Zealand—a meaningful gift and symbol of their friendship that Brady treasured and still has today.
Years later, when Brady met Erika, he wanted to share something with her that carried that same sense of meaning and connection. He reached out to his friend and asked him to send another authentic New Zealand greenstone necklace as a gift for Erika. The two necklaces became special to Brady and Erika, and both wore them regularly.
When the time came to name their new counseling practice, nothing seemed quite right. Then Erika's sister made a simple suggestion: Why not name it after the greenstone necklaces that had become such a meaningful part of their story?
The idea immediately resonated.
As Brady and Erika explored the meaning behind the name, they were drawn to the koru, a spiral form inspired by the unfurling frond of the New Zealand silver fern. The koru holds important significance within Māori art and culture and is commonly associated with new life, growth, renewal, and new beginnings. Rather than claiming that cultural tradition as their own, Brady and Erika found inspiration in those themes and how naturally they reflected their hopes for a counseling practice.
That inspiration influenced the Greenstone Counseling logo. The design uses two koru-inspired spirals to represent two people growing alongside one another—a reflection of the connection that can make healing and meaningful change possible.
And so Greenstone Counseling became more than simply a name. It grew from a meaningful gift and a symbol of friendship and connection into a counseling practice centered on growth, connection, hope, and new beginnings.
