Trauma Therapy at Greenstone Counseling: Healing in Southeast Idaho

Trauma can change the way a person feels, thinks, reacts, and connects with others. Sometimes the effects show up immediately. Other times, trauma stays buried and surfaces years later as anxiety, emotional numbness, relationship struggles, or a constant sense of being on edge.

Woman in distress

At Greenstone Counseling, we provide trauma therapy in Rexburg and Pocatello, Idaho, helping adults, teens, and children heal in a safe, supportive environment. Whether your trauma is recent or rooted in the past, recovery is possible.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is not just about what happened to you—it’s about how your mind and body responded to an overwhelming experience.

Trauma can come from:

  • Car accidents or injuries

  • Abuse (emotional, physical, or sexual)

  • Domestic violence

  • Grief or sudden loss

  • Childhood neglect or instability

  • Religious or faith-related trauma

  • Ongoing stress or unsafe environments

In Southeast Idaho, many people experience trauma connected to family systems, faith transitions, community pressure, or growing up in environments where emotions were not openly discussed. Even when things “look fine” on the outside, trauma can still have a lasting impact.

How Trauma Affects You in the Moment

When something overwhelming happens, your nervous system shifts into survival mode—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.

You might experience:

  • Panic or a racing heart

  • Emotional overwhelm or shutdown

  • Feeling disconnected or numb

  • Difficulty thinking clearly

  • A strong urge to escape or avoid

These responses are not weaknesses—they are your body trying to protect you.

How Trauma Shows Up Later in Life

Many people in Rexburg and Pocatello come to therapy without realizing their current struggles are connected to past trauma.

Trauma may show up as:

  • Anxiety or panic attacks

  • Depression or emotional numbness

  • Irritability or anger

  • Trouble trusting others

  • Relationship struggles

  • Perfectionism or people-pleasing

  • Low self-worth or shame

  • Feeling “stuck” or constantly overwhelmed

You may even think: “Nothing that bad happened… so why do I feel this way?”

This is incredibly common—and treatable.

Therapy Office

Trauma Therapy at Greenstone Counseling

At Greenstone Counseling, trauma therapy focuses on helping you feel safe, understood, and supported—without forcing you to relive painful experiences before you’re ready.

We help clients:

  • Understand how trauma affects the brain and body

  • Learn tools to regulate emotions and reduce overwhelm

  • Process painful experiences safely

  • Rebuild self-trust and confidence

  • Improve relationships and connection

Trauma Therapy Techniques We Use (Adults)

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they feel less intense and overwhelming.

It allows you to:

  • Reduce triggers

  • Shift negative beliefs

  • Feel more at peace with past experiences

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS helps you understand different “parts” of yourself—like the part that avoids, the part that criticizes, or the part that feels hurt.

Instead of fighting these parts, you learn to:

  • Understand them

  • Heal them

  • Feel more internally balanced

Somatic Therapy

Trauma lives in the body, not just the mind.

Somatic therapy helps you:

  • Notice physical sensations

  • Calm your nervous system

  • Release stored stress and tension

CBT & Grounding Techniques

These tools help you manage day-to-day symptoms by:

  • Challenging unhelpful thought patterns

  • Staying present during anxiety or overwhelm

  • Building emotional regulation skills

Trauma Therapy for Children and Teens

Trauma in kids often shows up through behavior rather than words.

You might notice:

  • Meltdowns or emotional outbursts

  • Withdrawal or anxiety

  • Sleep problems

  • School struggles

  • Sudden personality changes

At Greenstone Counseling, we help children:

  • Feel safe and supported

  • Learn emotional regulation

  • Process difficult experiences

  • Build trust and connection

We also work closely with parents to support healing at home.
