Marriage and Couples Counseling in Rexburg and Pocatello

Most couples don’t come to marriage counseling because of one dramatic moment. They come because something has been quietly wearing on the relationship for a long time: the same argument on a loop, a distance neither person knows how to cross, or a hurt that never got repaired. At Greenstone Counseling, our marriage therapists work with couples at every stage, from those who feel stuck to those who simply want to understand each other better. You can meet with us in person in Rexburg or Pocatello, or online from anywhere in Idaho.

What this Looks Like

People rarely say, “We need couples therapy.” More often they say:

  • “We talk, but nothing gets resolved.”

  • “We have the same fight over and over, just about different things.”

  • “I don’t feel like I can trust them anymore.”

  • “We’ve become roommates.”

  • “Ever since the baby, the move, or the job change, we’ve felt out of sync.”

Relationship counseling gives you a neutral space to slow those moments down. A couples therapist helps you both see the pattern you’ve fallen into, understand what each of you needs underneath it, and practice new ways of responding to each other. Couples come to us for communication breakdown, recurring conflict, trust and betrayal, intimacy and connection, major life transitions, and questions that come up before marriage.

Who We Help

Couples counseling at Greenstone is for married couples, engaged couples, and partners in serious relationships. It’s for couples who are close to calling it quits and for couples who are doing well and want to understand each other better. Greenstone is an all-inclusive practice, and
everyone is welcome here.

Rexburg: Our Rexburg office offers in-person couples therapy with a team of five clinicians.

Pocatello: Our Pocatello office also offers in-person couples therapy, so couples in Pocatello and the surrounding area can meet with a therapist close to home.

Online across Idaho: Telehealth couples therapy is available anywhere in the state. Many couples in Idaho Falls and Ammon work with us online, and some come to our offices in person. Virtual sessions work well when schedules are tight, when you live between towns, or when you’d feel more comfortable at home.

How the therapy works

Sessions are a standard clinical hour, and a couples therapist’s job isn’t to take sides or decide who is right. It’s to help the two of you understand how your relationship works, where it keeps getting stuck, and what each of you can do differently.

Our clinicians draw on a range of approaches, matched to the couple rather than applied to everyone the same way. Some of the frameworks used across our team include the Gottman Method, attachment-based therapy, family systems, and solution-focused work. When intimacy
is part of the picture, sex therapy can be part of the work. Mindfulness-based, ACT, and DBT skills can help when emotions run high in the middle of a conflict, and trauma-informed approaches such as EMDR and IFS can help when past experiences are shaping how each of you shows up.

There’s no set timeline. Some couples come for a focused stretch around one issue, and others stay longer to work through deeper patterns. It depends on who you are and what’s happening in your relationship.

Find The Right Fit

A good fit with your therapist is crucial, especially when two people need to feel comfortable with the same person. That’s why we offer a free consultation, usually 15 to 20 minutes, so you can talk with a therapist before you commit and find the best fit for you and your relationship

Questions people ask

  • Couples counseling works best when both partners take part, and most sessions include both of you.

  • You can still begin on your own. Working on your side of the pattern often changes how the relationship feels, and sometimes it opens the door for your partner to join later. If there are concerns about safety or abuse in the relationship, your therapist will talk with you about whether couples work is the right fit.

  • There’s no set timeline. It depends on the couple and what’s going on for them, and your therapist will talk with you about it as you go.

  • No. Many couples come before things reach a breaking point, and starting early often makes the work easier.

  • We offer a free consultation, usually 15 to 20 minutes, so you can find the best fit. Call us and we’ll help you decide.

  • Yes. Engaged couples can use sessions to talk through expectations, communication, family, finances, and anything else worth discussing before marriage.

  • Yes. Most couples from Idaho Falls and Ammon meet with us by telehealth, and some choose to come to our Rexburg or Pocatello offices. Call us and we’ll help you decide which works better for you.

  • We’re in network with most major insurance companies, and private pay is also an option. Before your first visit, we’ll complete a free insurance benefit check. We’ll contact your insurance company and share what they tell us about your mental health coverage. This gives you an estimate of your coverage, not a guarantee, so we also encourage you to call your insurer and confirm your own mental health benefits.

  • Dana Facer is a clinical intern completing her licensure hours under the supervision of Erika Nordfelt. Clients who see Dana receive paperwork that explains her intern status and supervision. We can bill only a couple of insurance companies for intern sessions. Otherwise, sessions with Dana are $30 each.

  • Yes. Telehealth couples therapy is available to couples anywhere in Idaho, including Pocatello, Idaho Falls, and Ammon.
